August Eugene “Buddy” Murphy was born in Dallas, Texas on August 18, 1933 to Alfred and Mary (Green) Murphy. He was raised in the Keechi Community and attended Buffalo schools in Leon County. He passed away at his home in Midway, Texas on Thursday, February 08, 2018.
Buddy enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in April of 1951 and served during the Korean War. In August 1954, he was honorably discharged as a Corporal (E4) with the Korean Service Medal. In 1955, he went to work for G & H Towing and became a Master Mariner operating tug boats until 1975. In 1983, he began his career as a correctional officer for the Texas Department of Corrections until he retired in March of 1999.
He was an avid coonhunter and supporter of the Trinity River Coonhunters Association. He raised Champion Treeing Walker coonhounds and took anyone who was interested on coonhunts. He raised and trained Appaloosa horses. He enjoyed teaching children and young adults how to ride, run barrels, goat tie and rope.
He is survived by wife, Rita Hollis Long Murphy of 32 years; son, Scott Long and wife Roxan of Madisonville, daughter, Melissa Long Mosley of Midway; grandson, Gene Nichols of Midway; granddaughter, Lisa Nichols of Huntsville; three daughters, Mary Ann Murphy of Orange Grove and Genie Stolze of Onalaska and Gwendolyn Murphy of Huntsville; three brothers, David Murphy and wife Jan of Spring, Sammy Murphy and wife Kim of Aransas Pass and Rick Murphy and wife Mary of Uvalde; three sisters, Joan Miller of Buffalo, Adelle Cawthon and husband Dan of Greenville and Margaret Waters and husband Dennis of Buffalo; twelve grandchildren, Jason Long, Ryan Long, Garrett Long, Kasey Long, Jessica Mosley, Brooke Mosley, Randell Mosley, Jimmy Stewart, Jacob Morgan, JulieAnn Morgan; Kimberly Darst; Annie Patten as well as great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Calvin Murphy and Claude Murphy; and two step sons, Michael Long and Joey Long.
Visitation will be held 5-7 pm on Saturday, February 10, at Madisonville Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 1 pm on Sunday, February 11 at Buffalo Cemetery in Buffalo.
