Bertha LaVerne Alston Foster

Bertha LaVerne Alston Foster was born on November 29, 1924, in Leona, Texas to James F. Alston and Kate Haston, the eldest of six children. She made her much anticipated entrance to glory on July 11, 2024 at the age of 99 and today is in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Growing up, LaVerne attended the Leona School and following graduation, she attended Brenham Business School. Throughout her life, she worked various jobs as a clerk, a checker at Carter's Grocery, a caregiver, and a cook/manager at different restaurants, including the Madison Co. Auction barn cafe. She married Glen E. Foster on June 16, 1961 in Oklahoma and travelled with him to Thailand, Chile, and Arizona for his work before settling back in Madisonville in 1976. She was a faithful member of Mt. Tabor Church of Christ and regularly attended Sunday service as long as she was able.

She will be fondly remembered as a kind, thoughtful lady who showed great compassion and care to those around her. She was affectionately known by many as “Sis,” “Sissy,” “Aunt Sis,” or simply LaVerne and was a joy to be around. LaVerne was not often one to just sit still and looked forward to every opportunity to work in her yard. She also enjoyed the companionship with her dogs who she diligently looked after and provided for until their passing. Apart from her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, LaVerne’s family was, without a doubt, her number one priority. She made great efforts to express her love to them all and never missed a single birthday or anniversary. LaVerne was an instrument used by God to reach into the lives of those around her in very special ways. For this reason, she will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know her.

A funeral service for LaVerne Foster is scheduled for Thursday, July 18, 2024, at 11 A.M. in the chapel of Madisonville Funeral Home, Madisonville Texas.  Burial will take place in the Leona Cemetery, Leona, Texas immediately following the service. The visitation for Mrs. Foster will commence one hour before the service at 10am. Stuart Carter will officiate the service.

LaVerne Foster was preceded in death by both parents, James and Kate Alston; husband, Glen E. Foster; two brothers, Clyde Alston and Oran Roy; and sister, Peggy Shauger.

Those left to cherish Laverne’s memory are her two sisters, Nancy Hummel and Martha White, both of Madisonville, Texas; one sister-in-law, Madie Alston of Madisonville, Texas; and numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family and loving friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leona Cemetery Association or the Mt. Tabor Church of Christ in her memory.

The final arrangements for LaVerne Foster are under the compassionate care and direction of Madisonville Funeral Home, Madisonville, TX.
