Carol Prothro Shaffer, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on January 16, 2025, just three months shy of her 71st birthday. Born on April 19, 1954, in Beaumont, Texas to John Thomas Prothro and Jimmy Reeves Prothro, Carol was a woman of fierce spirit, deep love, and unmatched dedication to her family.
She spent her childhood in Beaumont with her sister, Patricia and brother, Gary, graduating from French High School in 1972. It was there that she met her high school sweetheart, Scot Shaffer. The two had their first date on March 19, 1971, and were married on July 6, 1972, at First Baptist Church in Beaumont, Texas. Over the years, Carol and Scot built a beautiful family. In 1976, Carol became a mother to a beautiful daughter, Stephanie. In 1980, she welcomed a son, Scot Christopher, and in 1983, their family was made complete with the birth of another son, Sean Cory, both boys being born in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Carol and Scot’s love for family took them from Beaumont, Texas to Houston, Texas, then back to Beaumont, then Fairbanks, Alaska in 1978, then Sour Lake, Texas, and ultimately to Normangee, Texas in 1999. Over the years they added a son in love, Chris and two daughters-in-love, Angel and Kristin. In Normangee, their family grew even more, and they were blessed with seven grandchildren, Braydee Frederick, Brackyn Frederick, Dane Shaffer, Gaby Shaffer, Gracin Shaffer, Emerson Shaffer, and Teagan Shaffer.
Carol was the ultimate supporter, always present for every event, whether it was on the golf course, in the basketball gym, on the football field, at a volleyball game, on the softball field, or at a powerlifting meet. Her devotion to her family was unwavering, and she never missed a chance to cheer on her loved ones.
Carol was a woman of simple pleasures and deep passions. She believed in the power of God, a good snickers bar, and a cold root beer. She had an infectious laugh that would light up any room. Fierce, with a sharp wit and a sparkling presence, she always spoke her mind, never shying away from sharing her thoughts. Her love for the colors blue and yellow were well known, and no trip would be complete without her picking up a blue bottle or a heart-shaped rock as a keepsake. Her love for jewelry and leggings was second to none. Her personal style was as unique and vibrant as her personality.
Carol’s heart was as big as her love for animals, especially her Pomeranian, Kendalyn and her cat, Reba Jean. She traveled the world with Scot, and though her navigation skills often left much to be desired, it was always an adventure, and that was the way they liked it.
Carol was preceded in death by her father and mother, Tom and Jimmie Prothro; brother, Gary Prothro; and father-in-law, Grady Shaffer. Carol is survived by the love of her life, Scot Shaffer; her children and their spouses, Stephanie Frederick (Chris), Scot C. Shaffer (Angel), and Cory Shaffer (Kristin); her grandchildren, Braydee Frederick and fiancé, Mason Hardy, Brackyn Frederick, Dane Shaffer, Gaby Shaffer, Gracin Shaffer, Emerson Shaffer and Teagan Shaffer (Ma’s sweetheart); her sister, Patricia Soileau (Carl); her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gary and Teri Shaffer, Cody Shaffer and Sandi Mischenko, Kent and Rhonda Shaffer; and mother-in-law, Lyska Shaffer. Carol had many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
Carol will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love, humor, and devotion will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. We will cherish her memory and the guidance she gave us forever.
