Mrs. Dorothy Jean (Kimmey) Coleman, 91, of Nacogdoches (formerly of Huntsville) passed away on February 21, 2019. Preceded in death by her mother (Edna), father (Earnest) a sister and husband (Weldon), she had two children; Ron Coleman of Nacogdoches and Nancy Cumbie of College Station. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Shelly Coleman and a son-in-law, Don Cumbie. She enjoyed 6 grandchildren (Clay Coleman, Heather Cannon, Kevin Coleman, Holly Burkhall, Darci Granda and Mallory Ingle) and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was born in North Zulch, Texas in 1927 and moved to Houston soon thereafter. She graduated from Milby High School. She met Weldon in Houston and they were married in 1945. She and her family moved to Huntsville in 1957 where she initially worked for the Texas Department of Corrections and progressed to the position of Executive Secretary to the Director. She then began a second career in the Windham School District and retired for good in 1992, but she was not really through. Volunteering to work for the Prison Museum, she spent many more years serving with people she loved as well as the general public. She was a member of the Huntsville Church of Christ.
Making friends easily, she reluctantly left many behind when, in 2017, she moved to Nacogdoches due to health issues. Eagerly embracing a new life in an outstanding assisted living facility there, she made more friends and was able to continue playing 42 and keeping up with her Huntsville friends and current events. She faced death in much the same way that she had lived---with dignity, poise, and a love for her Lord and Savior.
A gathering of family and friends will be held in the chapel at the Willowhole Cemetery in North Zulch, Texas on Saturday, March 2 at 10:00 am. After the gathering, graveside services will begin at noon and she will be buried next to her husband. Reverand Joe Orr, former pastor of the First Baptist Church in Mount Enterprise, Texas will officiate the ceremony.
“Granny Dot” will be sorely missed by her many friends and by her family, all of whom adored her. Her life was indeed a life well lived.
In lieu of flowers it was her will that contributions be made to: Magnolia Court Assisted Living, 5902 North Street, Nacogdoches, TX 75965.
Arrangements are under the direction of Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville, Texas.
