Lewis Harold Akers

Lewis Harold Akers was born on July 19, 1945 in Artesia, New Mexico to Leonard and Helen Akers. He graduated from Floyd High School in Floyd, New Mexico, in 1963, and then Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico. After serving two years in the Marines, he was honorably discharged when it was decided Lewis was too tall for the duties required.

Lewis went on to run a dairy farm and later to grow peanuts in Portales. He had multiple farms and ranches in both New Mexico and Texas, spending a lot of his life in south Texas. He lived in the Madisonville area around twenty years, farming, and later working as a ranch foreman. He trapped wild hogs and took them to market so much so, that he designed his own hog trailer that he pulled with his Jeep.

Lewis was a man of few words, and those he spoke were always full of knowledge and wisdom. Many he met said he was the smartest person they knew. He had a hidden sense of humor and a contagious laugh, and when he shared them everyone around him could not help but smile. He was tough as nails, once killing a wild hog with nothing but a pocket knife, and his daughters would often describe him to others as resembling the “Marlboro Man." The hardest working man you would ever meet, he worked every day right up until his last one. He was a loving father who taught his daughters by example to be strong and independent, to work hard, and to choose what is right.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Akers; parents, Leonard and Helen Akers; sister, Leona Simnacher and husband, Larry Simnacher; infant sisters, Mildred and Alice Akers; step-son, Alan Wilson; and nephew, David Robertson.

He is survived by sister, Velma Staten; daughters, Allison Akers, Amanda Akers, and Audrey Seaton, and their husbands, Thomas Bates, Russell Baker, and Kevin Seaton; step-daughter, Sharon Dictson and husband, Gary Dictson; grandchildren, Helen Akers Bates, Lucas Akers, Jesse Akers, and Andrew Seaton; step-grandsons, Mark Wilson, John Dictson, and Jason Dictson; nephews, Alton Bostwick and Daniel Simnacher; and niece, Lisa Simnacher.

Graveside services for Lewis Akers will be held 2 P.M., Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at Leona Cemetery, Leona, Texas.
