Lynn Wood Lawson was born December 26, 1935 in Madison County, Texas to William Andrew "Buster" and Corine Ira (Glass) Lawson. Lynn was one of twelve children born to Buster and Corine and the oldest of nine children to survive as adults. Lynn grew up in and around Iola and graduated from Iola High School in May, 1953. After graduation Lynn entered the working world and was a force to be reckoned with, often referred to as the "hardest working man around," even that comment was made recently by his own children. Lynn Wood met and married Jenny Lee Manning in 1957, and five children were born to the union, Calvin Lynn, Billy Ray, Stella Jean (Todd), Wanda Jane (Cline) and Carrie Beth Lawson. Lynn passed away suddenly, yet peacefully, still laughing and joking with the staff of The Manor in Bryan, Texas, on June 22, 2024.
Lynn Wood worked hard his entire life and tried his hand at many trades. At a young age he farmed and broke and rode horses for various ones in Iola and surrounding towns. He soon ventured into the oil industry and spent many of his years in the oil field. All the while making use of his carpenter skills on the side, as well as in the construction industry. He worked for TDCJ as a correctional officer for many years and last but not least, just four years ago, retired from the Houston County Sheriff's Department in Crockett, Texas.
Although Lynn was always working, he found time to watch his kids and grandkids participating in anything sports related, his love and passion was watching a good ball game. He and his youngest daughter, Carrie, spent countless hours and traveled countless miles, over the years, raising and showing heifers and steers in county fairs and livestock shows all over Texas.
In August of 1993, Lynn married his soul mate, Linda Flynt Rucker. They were two peas in a pod and found so much in common, they embarked upon various road trips and adventures and never left each other's side for over thirty years. When you didn't find Lynn and Linda in their lawn chairs behind home plate or other ball games, they were at home tending their garden and chickens. Lynn loved farming and gardening and was an exceptional gardener. He would often sell his vegetables and eggs at their home, along Hwy 21 in Crockett, Texas. Lynn also loved to BBQ and gather with his family on special occasions and holidays. He loved to eat and always had a ball game on tv. While he was fond of the Dallas Cowboys he was an Aggie Fan through and through. It would almost cause him a panic attack if he thought he wasn't able to tune in to an Aggie game.
Lynn leaves behind his cherished and beloved family, his wife, Linda Lawson of Crockett; son, Billy Lawson (Tara) of Arkansas; daughters, Stella Todd (Kendall) of Willis, Carrie Lawson of Dobbin, Lisa McKown (Justin) of College Station, and Lori Clayton (Korey) of Iola; his brother, Robert Lawson (Dianne) of Wylie; his sisters, Mary Tucker (Robert), of Caldwell, Margaret Denman (Huey), of Cross and Louise Boudreaux of Caldwell; his grandchildren, Sheri Reeves, Justin Lawson, Buddy Lawson, Billy Lawson, Jr., Brent Lawson, Kyle Todd, Clay Todd, Annye Todd, Kevin Akins, Katrina Akins, Jadie Howard, John Phillips, Jr., Logan McKown and Pressli Clayton, as well as great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Calvin Lynn Lawson(Amy); his daughter, Wanda Lawson Cline (Johnny); brothers, Tommy Lawson and Wilmer Lawson (Bertha); and sisters, Pauline Langley and Geraldine Overman.
A funeral service for Lynn will be held at Madisonville Funeral Home on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 11 A.M. followed by burial at Evergreen Cemetery in the Keith Community of Grimes County. Visitation will take place one hour before the service starting at 10 A.M.
