Richard William Byrd, Sr.

Mr. Richard William Byrd, Sr. passed away on March 22, 2022 at his home in Madisonville, Texas.

Richard was born on November 5, 1942 to the late Thurman Byrd and Betrice Gooden Byrd. He grew up in Madisonville where he was known by most as “Bubba”. He accepted Christ at an early age with Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church where he later served as a deacon until his death. He was a graduate of Marion Anderson High School and a loyal supporter of its alumni. He acquired certification in barbering and worked for many years alongside his father in their family owned barber shop. Richard also worked for the First National Bank of Madisonville as a mail clerk until his retirement. It was there that he met various people and made numerous friends.

Richard married Carolyn Harrison Morrow on June 3, 1964. To this wonderful union, two children were born.

Richard, aka “Bubba”, had a very charismatic and humorous personality. He enjoyed telling jokes and kept you laughing. His hobbies included fishing and burning rubber in his old Ford “Oreo” truck. He was a loving husband and a nurturing father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Shirley Hornsby.

Richard is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Carolyn Byrd; a son, Richard Byrd, Jr. (Sheila); a daughter, Diane Byrd; two grandsons, Lance Byrd (Twanna) and Byron Byrd; three granddaughters, Ebony Byrd, Amber Byrd, and Destini Byrd; four great granddaughters, Kameryn Byrd, Kalynce Byrd, Kynslie Byrd, and Kylie Byrd; a niece, Frieda Hornsby; a nephew, Mario Hornsby (Anika); a great nephew, Trenton Johnson; a great great niece, Teaghan Johnson; and a host of relatives and friends.

Homegoing services for Richard William Byrd, Sr. will be held at 2 P.M., on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at First Baptist Church in Madisonville, Texas. A public visitation will be held March 25, 2022, from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. at Madisonville Funeral Home. Interment will be in West End Cemetery, Madisonville, Texas.
