He made a profession of faith as a child while attending Dorcas Wills Baptist Church in Trinity, Texas. Sam was a veteran of the Korean War where he served in the U.S. Army. He worked for thirty-two years at Alcoa Aluminum in Rockdale, Texas subsequently moving to rural North Zulch following his retirement. He passed his time ranching and finishing furniture. After enjoying some "retirement time," he decided to return to the workforce and took a job with Madisonville C.I.S.D. Following his second "retirement," he worked for Brazos Transit until he retired permanently in 2007 to enjoy his family from the comfort of his back porch. Sam was a Master Mason, a member of Rockdale Lodge No. 414, and was recognized in 2010 for his fifty years of membership. Sam had lived in Madison County for the past twenty-two years and attended First Baptist Church in Madisonville.
