Sarah Jo Marks Diserens Spikes, 75, of North Zulch, went home to our Lord at 11:33 AM, Sunday, October 7, 2018, at Cornerstone Hospital in Conroe, Texas. She was born February 26, 1943, in North Zulch, Texas, to Lela Mae and Joseph Porter Marks. Sarah’s mother and father along with her brother, Clifton Marks, and one son, Curtis Allen Diserens preceded her in death. Surviving family includes her two daughters, Melissa (Diserens) Radde and husband Karl of North Zulch, and Kendra (Diserens) Burtis and husband Brandon of Friendswood; and their father Billy (HotShot) Diserens of North Zulch; grandchildren, Elice (Douget) Regini and husband Cody, Taylor (Douget) Creel and husband Russell, and Carson Radde all of North Zulch and Baileigh Burtis and Blaine Burtis of Friendswood; and great-grandchildren Kimber Regini, Ryann Regini, and Lilly Creel of North Zulch; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She married James Elvis Spikes on June 27, 2010, and through her marriage to James, she is also survived by step children, Kim Antley, her husband Darren, and Rachell St. Romain.
She graduated from North Zulch High School in 1961. Other than a three-year stint in Houston while her husband served in Vietnam, Sarah was a lifelong resident of North Zulch. After returning to North Zulch in the early 70’s, she became an LVN working in OB/GYN for several years followed by eight years with the Madison County Justice of the Peace’s office before joining the Brazos County Sheriff’s Department as the head nurse for the jail for many years under Sherriff Chris Kirk until her retirement.
She enjoyed researching the McWhorter family history from her mother’s side of the family and was actively involved in the Bethel Cemetery Association with her brother Clifton. She was well known for her banana pudding and support of the youth of North Zulch ISD. She is still fondly remembered as Sgt. “D” by many former residents of the Brazos County Jail. There are several antique and estate sales centers that will truly miss her presence.
The visitation is from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Friday, October 12, 2018, at the Madisonville Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at First Baptist Church of North Zulch. Pastor Kerry Stroud will be officiating. The burial will be held immediately after the service at Willowhole Cemetery.
