Steve Measell, age 66, of Needville, Texas, passed away at his home on December 20, 2017 following a lengthy illness. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 P.M., Friday, December 22, 2017 at the Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville, Texas. Bro. Munroe Rice will officiate the service, and interment will be in the Cross Cemetery in Grimes County.
Walter Stephen Measell was born on April 21, 1951, in Pontiac, Michigan. He was the only child of Walter Marvin & Shirley Irene (West) Measell. As extended family began to move from Michigan to Corpus Christi, Steve’s parents followed suit.
Steve was a 1969 graduate of Carroll High School in Corpus Christi. Wanting to further his education, Steve attended Del Mar Technical Institute where he received a degree in Electronic Technology. While attending college he worked for a local radio station as disc jockey radio personality, “Steve Drake.” It was here that he met and began dating the love of his life, Diane Kretschmar. At the time of Steve’s graduation, he was offered a job with Brown and Root in Houston, Texas as an electrical draftsman. He and Diane moved to Houston in 1974, and were married on March 15, 1975. They made their home in Houston for a small time, but ultimately decided to raise their two boys, Scott and Mark, in Sugar Land. Steve always had a job, even in high school, but his career in Engineering started when he moved to Houston to work for Brown and Root, moving on to also hold jobs at M.W. Kellog, C.D.I. and Worley Parsons.
After thirty years of residence in Sugar Land, Steve and Diane made a strategic move to the country. They chose a quieter life in Needville, Texas. Steve had always been a “city boy” but yearned for country living— somewhere he could sit on the porch in his boxers and drink coffee and nobody was able to see him (except the ponies, alpacas, llamas and goats). Although Steve was not the type of person to spend a lot of time outdoors, he did enjoy taking care of his animals. He also loved music and working on his computer. In the last few years of his life, Steve had also taken an interest in genealogy research.
Steve was forced to retire from his job in July 2016, due to health concerns. This, however, afforded him the opportunity to travel and enjoy some much needed quality time with his family.
Steve is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Diane Measell; sons & daughters-in-law, Scott & Annette Measell and Mark & Morgan Measell and grandson, Coy Measell.
In lieu of flowers, the Measell family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Madisonville Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
